Romania: A Nation Of Good and Decent People

I read an article today in the Romanian Online Newspaper, NineOClock.ro and I felt a surge of sympathy towards the writer as well as the country. It was one of the nicest articles I’ve read lately while still being a complaint. We’ll get into that later.

Romania has quite a history of maltreatment from other nations. It borders Hungary and Serbia on the west, Ukraine and Moldova on the northeast and east, and Bulgaria on the south with a small portion bordering the Black Sea on the southeast. Their history is of great interest but is lengthy and we will not attempt to elucidate its early years. It is a country of naturally peaceful people and has always striven to maintain neutrality when others war around them. In World War 1 in 1914, they proclaimed neutrality but after two years of pressure from France and some other allies, they joined in with them.

The Romanian military campaign ended in disaster for Romania as the Central Powers conquered two-thirds of the country and defeated its army within months. Nevertheless, Moldavia remained in Romanian hands after the invading forces were stopped in 1917. Total deaths from 1914 to 1918, military and civilian, within contemporary borders, were estimated at 748,000. By the war's end, Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire had collapsed and disintegrated; Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania proclaimed unions with the Kingdom of Romania in 1918. By the 1920 Treaty of Trianon, Hungary was forced to renounce in favour of Romania all the claims of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy over Transylvania. The union of Romania with Bukovina was ratified in 1919 in the Treaty of Saint Germain, and with Bessarabia in 1920 by the Treaty of Paris. (Romania History: Wikipedia)

Following World War 1, Romania successfully restored most of their territory occupied by Romanians and began to make progress once more. Then came World War 2. Again they attempted to remain neutral but once again, the Soviet Union threatened to invade them and with pressure building from both Russia and the Nazis they retreated their government and military from Bessarabia as well from northern Bukovina to avoid war. They eventually were almost forced to join in with the Germans, but after the Nazis became almost beaten, Romania changed over to the side of the Allies. They were not counted as part of the winning nations and were placed under Russian oversight.

Russia successfully forced a socialist government upon them where they remained until the collapse of the Soviet Union. They then regained their sovereignty and although they had one bloody revolution, they continued to make progress and during the decade from 2000 to 2010, their progress and stability increased meaningfully. They still have their problems as do most countries but knowing the strength of these good people, they are sure to overcome.

The article mentioned in the beginning is concerning the recently developing demonstrations and sit-ins, similar to our own Occupiers. Here is a paragraph taken from the article which seems to sum up the problem as well as the taste it places in the public minds:

And the series of social protests, which became peaceful meanwhile, continues each evening in Bucharest and throughout the country. The only common denominator of these rallies is the absence of any precise programme, as they target almost everything. (“We want our country back” Editorial: January 22, 2012 NineOClock.ro)

This was the original retirement haven for the Roman aristocracy. And the landing place for Abraham's Austrian tribe, and the have of Noah and his kin. Would like to visit some day.

Hi Christofer, so would I but I know I can never make it. I became acquainted with a man from there several years ago who has a wife and a grown daughter. Wonderful people, and a man who loves his family dearly. We corresponded for some time. He had an underlying desire to move to the USA, thinking that his daughter would be in better surroundings and have better opportunities. She was about 12 or 14 at the time. I told him to weigh things carefully because of the various undesirable things which have developed in recent years, drugs, young thugs and so very much crime. He never did move over here, so I don't know what may have influenced him.
