On January 12, 2012, Rasmussen’s poll showed Mitt Romney with 41% support in the Florida GOP presidential race, with Gingrich a rather pathetic second place of 19%, Ron Paul with 9%. But, after Gingrich’s two high rated showings in debates, plus his excellent unexpected showing in the South Carolina primary, the scenario has changed markedly.
I began writing this year’s articles concerning the GOP race for presidential nominee, advising all the candidates to keep the negativity out of their race. The American people do not like negative ads or rhetoric. What they do want to hear is why one candidate is superior to another in his knowledge of how to turn this nation around so that it will again be a prosperous nation with full, or near full, employment again. They all seemed to do that as far as the first debate was concerned even though a few barbs were exchanged by one couple.
Newt Gingrich actually wanted to do that and even made and agreement with Mitt Romney to stick only with the issues at stake in the race. Romney’s PAC wasn’t part of the agreement and so they began to degrade Gingrich. This led to some exchanges between Romney and Gingrich, which both tried to calm down. But it got worse when Romney was asked by another candidate about his finances. He lost the debate that night because he did not know how to reply. Juan Williams the co-host with Brett Baer, asked a provocative question to Newt Gingrich concerning his advising putting poor children to work. Gingrich clarified his stand on that so clearly and intelligently, he received a standing ovation from the audience. The first ever known to have been afforded a debater.
This particular debate harmed Romney and lifted Gingrich tremendously in the eyes of the potential GOP voters. Two things come into play here. One: Romney is a sneaky person, hiding not only his financial records, but claiming to be many things to the conservative voters which his record shows to be untrue. Two: Newt Gingrich is perhaps the most thoroughly informed and knowledgeable person as to the needs of government and the nation, plus how to develop and act upon those items, than any other person in this country.
If anyone has listened to him over the past few years and also studied the work done as the speaker of the House of Representatives, they can readily see why I make those statements. He has been interviewed by many news reporters, both conservative and liberal, and has yet to be presented with a subject that he did not excel in explaining…that I have witnessed.
I see in today’s news that the Romney crew plans to continue pressuring Gingrich about his previous marriages and the latest accusation by his second wife that he asked for an “open marriage” where he could keep his mistress. Gingrich denied that, but even so, he has acknowledged that he has made serious mistakes in the past which are considered immoral but he still insists that he has now tried to rectify those faults and has become an active member of the Catholic Church. So, you see, it becomes apparent that the Romney crew has not much to work with against Gingrich, except his moral background. There is nothing new to be told about it but they plan to keep rubbing the public’s nose in it. This is a plus for Gingrich.
NO ONE likes to hear negativity and especially over and over. The more those subjects are smeared on the public’s face, the lower the Romney ranking will go. I do hope that Gingrich will not allow himself to stoop to their level and spread on the fact that the Romney household worked illegal immigrants in the past. That he has flipped and flopped more on abortion, gun control, and Gay rights, than John Kerry did on a lot of things.
The race is beginning to get the voters attention.
