I have watched a number of debates involving candidates for party primary elections as well as those for presidential general elections. But the one at Myrtle Beach was indeed one alone. There was more substance brought out and more pressure put on those that are all talk. It will be interesting to see just what influence it made on the voters of South Carolina and the nation.

Perhaps I am somewhat biased but I tried to listen and to evaluate each candidate’s remarks. Yet, when it was over, I had not changed my preferences one twit, but rather, was much more convinced that my already made choices are the right ones. As it now stands, I would vote for either of four of the candidates over Barack Obama. But, should Ron Paul win in the primary election, I would resort to a write in candidate, knowing full well he would not win. I don’t question the man’s decency or morals, but he has no clue as to how to run this nation and keep it safe. Nor could he begin to improve the economy. In fact, if he did not have a congress to keep him in check, we would collapse. As John Donne’s famous phrase, No Man Is An Island, infers, no man can exist alone and in the present day, one nation cannot exist alone. Mr. Paul, seemingly does not recognize that fact.

My choice? By far, Newt Gingrich. This man’s knowledge of this country’s condition and needs is amazing. He has long understood what it will take for the U.S. to be brought back to a prosperous and safe nation. With only limited authority and assistance, he brought about a balanced budget while serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives. He, not Bill Clinton, was most responsible for that period of prosperity, and in fact, had it been left to President Clinton and wife Hillary, we would have seen a situation similar to what we are now in. Hillary was set upon installing a mandatory health plan upon the people with overwhelming costs to taxpayers. The President did see enough progress in the plan of Gingrich that he began to cooperate in some items.

Gingrich is not only highly intelligent and knowledgeable but he has an uncanny ability to enlist cooperation from both parties of congress, which is perhaps the most needed thing of all at this point. He is strong willed and when he knows something will work, he is tenacious in seeing it through. As Lady Bird Johnson said of Lyndon Johnson, “He will be such a can-do president”.

Mitt Romney: Here is a man also of high intelligence and has most of the correct answers. He will, if elected, make us a good president I believe. He has some qualities of which I do not approve, but then most of them do have such. He has flip-flopped on several issues, seemingly dependent upon whom he is seeking votes from. He has, however, been confronted on those matters and has been able to give some fairly credible responses. He also currently hesitates to disclose his finances as is required of those running for presidency. He says that he will, yet the reason for his delaying to do so, causes a bit of suspicion. If, however, we allowed this type of excessive privacy to cause us to accept anyone into government, we would not have our current president nor any of his cabinet, judge appointees, etc.

Rick Perry: I believe Governor Perry is a good man and very likely would make a good president, perhaps with less astuteness than Gingrich, but acceptable. With my limited knowledge of him, I could be content with his election.

Rick Santorum: Again, seemingly a good man with most of the right answers. He would probably make a good and effective president.

Ron Paul: It seems that there is always at least one person involved in our four year presidential election which causes his party grief. Sometimes, with money from who knows where, they can become burdensome to their party, as is the case with third party candidates. They only hinder and muddy the waters for the other candidates. Mr. Paul is just such. If elected, it would be catastrophic. He would be an embarrassment to the nation. We might as well elect Michael Moore, Donald Trump, or me. He has one up on us, though. He can find his way to D.C.

As far as the debate last evening is concerned, I think Gingrich was outstanding and most likely gained ground. I believe Romney may have suffered at least a slight loss. Both Perry and Santorum seemingly held their ground but probably did not gain much, Perry may have helped himself with some good answers. Paul blew it from start to finish with his infantile jabbering and wild imaginations. Nevertheless, he has some very tenacious followers who may continue to confuse the voters with his pipe dreams and wild imaginations.
