Joran van der Sloot was finally sentenced for the murder of Stephany Flores, a 21 year old Peruvian girl on May 30, 2010. The penalty for murder in Peru is a maximum of 30 years and a minimum of 15 years. His attorney Jose Jimenez had advised him to plead guilty in hopes of a lighter sentence.
Van der Sloot reportedly showed little emotion during the procedures and looked downward during the lengthy reading of the charges and circumstances. He also said at the end of the sentencing that he reserved the right to appeal.
The family of Natalee Holloway, after a judge declared hr legally dead yesterday, report that they are not nearly through with his case. He remains the only suspect in her death but was never convicted after several arrests and false confessions, none of which could be verified.
He then sought to extort $200,000 from the Holloways in exchange for telling them where their daughter’s body could be found. After wiring him $25,000 which he accepted and used to flee Aruba, and came to Peru where the present case developed. A warrant for extortion and wire fraud was then issued by U.S. Federal authorities. Van der Sloot could receive more years in prison for extortion and wire fraud in the U.S. than for murder in Peru.
Stephany Flores’ father is unhappy and has complained to authorities and reporters than van der Sloot is enjoying favorable conditions extended him because of foreign money. He says that van der Sloot has been receiving special privileges since he was first arrested and he plans to hold a press conference on Monday with evidence of special treatment.
Although the Peruvian authorities deny any such favors, there have been news reports that the prisoner has had a television and a video gaming console. It is also known that he has been kept apart from the general prisoners portion of the prison, based on the fear that he would be harmed.
