About two weeks ago, it was rumored that van der Sloot would plead guilty to the charge of murdering 21 year old Peruvian girl, Stephany Flores. However, his lawyer Jose Jimenez, denied it at the time.

When he appeared before the court on January 6, Jimenez requested a delay for more consideration of the possibilities of pleas. The court re-scheduled the hearing until yesterday, January 11.

His plea was guilty due to a post traumatic stress disorder which he had suffered from persecution received over the case of the missing Birmingham graduate in 2005. He was the last person known to have seen her alive and was arrested several times only to be released for lack of evidence in the case. He became notorious for admitting to the crime for short periods and then to retract the confession.

The Peruvian court does not consist of a jury of peers, but was a panel of 3 lady judges. The penalty for murder under Peru’s law is a maximum of 30 years imprisonment, with a minimum of 15 years. The prosecuting attorneys are pushing for the maximum 30 years plus restitution for the family of the murdered girl.

He was also accused of stealing at least $200.00 and some credit cards from the slain girl. He also took her car to escape from the scene of the crime. It was found abandoned in a different location of the city.

If the robbery is taken into consideration in the court, the maximum sentence for murder during a robbery is life imprisonment.

Witnesses state that even though van der Sloot stated, “I am truly sorry for this act. I feel very bad”, he showed no remorse and smiled while talking with his attorney before leaving the court room.

After accepting the guilty plea on Wednesday, the panel of judges scheduled sentencing for tomorrow, Friday January 13. The law requiring sentence to be made within 48 hours of the conviction.
