In June of 2007, Carmen Tarleton, 39, a registered nurse in Thetford, Vermont, lived with her two daughters, ages 12 and 14 at that time. She and her estranged husband, Herbert Rodgers, 52, were in the process of obtaining a divorce.
According to various archived accounts, Rodgers was angry about the situation and here is a quote from an article written after the sentencing of Rodgers.
According to police records and court documents, Rodgers did not receive the guidance he sought and on the morning after his birthday around 2:30 A.M., he drove to Tarleton’s home. He threw the dumbbell through the glass door and entered the house. Tarleton, thinking it was a burglary ordered the young girls to hide in a room and lock the door. They ran into the bathroom and locked it.
Then Rodgers shoved her onto the bed and hit her with the baseball bat, breaking her arm. He hit her again, fracturing her skull and eye-socket, then he tied her hands behind her back and squirted the lye all over her head and body. She suffered burns over 80% of her body. One doctor stated that the strong alkaline burns from lye is among the most painful, destructive and difficult to treat.
Her condition has stabilized, leaving her now with no vision in one eye, very little in the other eye, has difficulty breathing through her nose, and her facial features are actually grotesque. However, she has now been approved for a facial transplant with a grant for $3.4 million to cover the cost.
Rodgers pled guilty to one charge of maiming and was sentenced to 30 to 70 years in prison in February 2009. Had he not pled guilty, it is reported that he could have received a life sentence. However, with a minimum of 30 years beginning at age 53, amounts to virtually the same.

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Dreadful. I hear some of these things and cannot fathom how people even concoct the evil deeds they carry out. I've been involved in a dreadful mess myself and have not yet put out the third installment where things got rotten in my own life. But at its worst, it wasn't so cold as this. It is articles like this that make you say thank heavens my head is on straight and may it stay that way for all the days of my life. Makes one thank the Creator for the life we have.Indeed.
