The notorious son of a former government judge in Aruba who is now awaiting trial charged with murder in Peru, has filed a ten million dollar lawsuit against the government of Chile for violation of his human rights. His suit claims that his rights were violated when the Chilean government extradited him to Peru where he was accused of killing Stephany Flores.

Van der Sloot asserts that pressure was exerted by the President of the Republic, Alan Garcia Perez, to have him extradited. He also claims that the police refused him access to a phone or computer to contact his family and that he was deprived of his rights to counsel. He also names former Peruvian Minister of Interior Octavio Salazar, former police generals Miguel Hidalgo and Cesar Guardia, and Ricardo Flores, the father of murder victim Stephany Flores, in the suit.

Joran is still the leading suspect in the now 6 year old disappearance of Natalee Holloway during a graduation celebration trip to Aruba. She had been graduated only days before from the Mountain Brook High School, in Mountain Brook, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham. Natalee and several of her graduating classmates were on the trip together when she disappeared on May 30, 2005. She, or her body was never found and after being held by police on several occasions, van der Sloot was released each time on “insufficient evidence” to hold him.

He actually confessed under circumstances that he later denied and finally the case became so cold that it was almost dropped. The Holloway family, however did not give up.

Around March 29, 2010, Van der Sloot allegedly contacted John Q. Kelly, legal representative of Natalee's mother Beth Holloway, with an offer to reveal the location of her daughter's body and the circumstances surrounding her death for an advance of US$25,000 against a total of $250,000.

Kelly said that he secretly went to Aruba in April to meet with Van der Sloot, who was desperate for money, and gave him $100. Kelly notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation to set up a sting operation with the Aruban authorities. On May 10, Van der Sloot allegedly accepted the amount of $15,000 by wire transfer to his account in the Netherlands, following a cash payment of $10,000 that was videotaped by undercover investigators in Aruba.

In exchange, Van der Sloot told Kelly that his father buried Holloway's remains in the foundation of a house. Authorities determined that the information that he in return provided was false, because the house had not yet been built at the time of Holloway's disappearance. Van der Sloot later e-mailed Kelly that he lied about the house. Holloway was shocked that the FBI did not promptly file extortion charges against Van der Sloot, allowing him to leave freely with the money to Bogotá, Colombia, on his way to Lima, Peru. The FBI and the office of the U.S. Attorney contended that the case had not yet been sufficiently developed. (Wikipedia: Joran van der Sloot)

Van der Sloot arrived in Aruba where he spent considerable time in a casino. It was here that he met Stephany Flores who then went to his apartment with him. On the morning of May 30, 2010, the 5th anniversary of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, Stephany Flores was killed in the hotel room where video cameras showed she had entered with van der Sloot, who had fled the country into Chile. An international arrest warrant was issued by Interpol.

He was arrested on June 3, near Curacavi by the Chilean police. He was traveling in a hired taxi on highway 68 towards Santiago, capital of Chile. With him, was found a laptop, foreign currency, a business card case, detailed charts of ocean currents around Lima, and bloody clothes.

Van der Sloot was extradited back to Peru and has been held there in prison while the investigation has continued. He has now been incarcerated for one and one-half years. Reports have been made that a guilty plea by him would bring only 3 to 5 years imprisonment. The maximum sentence for murder in Peru is 30 years which is what he will face if he pleads not guilty. A Peruvian judge has now set January 6, 2012 as the trial date for van der Sloot.

Good investigative info you are giving us here Joel. What a crazy and sad tale this whole Van der Sloot thing turned out to be. Makes one wonder how God could and still does let him walk around and do what he most probably has done and might do again if given the chance. But, someone much wiser than me said that's why God created "us", to change things and make a difference etc...who knows.

Hi Steve, thanks for the comment. Even his mother says he has a mental problem. My own opinion is that he killed both of these girls for no reason. I think that is where he gets his funnies. The autopsy on this Flores girl showed no evidence of sexual activity.
