Humongous Iceberg Forming In Antarctica But No Fodder For Chicken Little Fans

In October, scientists discovered a surface crack in the floating ice shelf in front of the Pine Island Glacier (PIG) of West Antarctica. This rift is estimated to be about 30km (20mi) in length and 60m (200ft) deep. The size of the iceberg when it breaks loose is comparable to the size of the city of Berlin.

Their current prognosis is that it should break free towards the end of this year or the early part of 2012. NASA’s IceBridge project scientists are watching it and they indicate that it must be monitored closely when it breaks free. There is danger of it becoming a shipping hazard. It also can cause considerable impact on it’s immediate surroundings. Read this excerpt.

As they crumble and melt, they dump millions of tonnes of freshwater into the local marine environment. Dust and rock fragments picked up on land act as nutrients when they fall into the ocean, fuelling life such as algae and diatoms right at the bottom of food webs. But these huge tabular blocks can also put obstacles in the way of animals trying to get to familiar feeding grounds. (Huge iceberg forms in Antarctica-Jonathan Amos, BBC News)

The first thing to happen when something like this occurs is that the man-caused global warming advocates grab it and again raise their voices that the “sky is falling.” I suspect Al Gore is now warming up his fuel guzzling jet plane to begin his crusade anew. Not so, say the NASA scientists.

These scientists report that this type of breaking off of a large iceberg occurs every ten years or so, naturally. The last big one occurred in 2001 and they report that they were expecting another at any time when this one was discovered.

"Eventually, the iceberg will move further north; it will be picked up by wind and ocean currents - and the primary ocean current there is the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. We will certainly be following it," said IceBridge project scientist Dr Michael Studinger. (Ibid)

According to scientists, these huge icebergs, continue to break down and crumble into smaller bergs as they drift northward. They usually come to rest around the South Georgia Island, an island some 170km in length off the southern tip of South America. These icebergs sometime cause problems with the aquatic life in the area as they dump ’billions of tonnes’ of fresh water into the surroundings.
