Infrared Heaters: Considering A EdenPure or HeatSurge? Check This

I have written several articles concerning the EdenPure Infrared Heaters. You will find more complaints on the internet concerning them than you will find praising them. This is not too unusual however, because many people who are perfectly happy with them, do not take the time to submit a satisfactory review. I belong to the complainers. I purchased one a few years ago and was completely satisfied with it the first season, and started into the next, when it stopped heating. The warranty was gone and I opted to forget the thing and take the beating on it. When you order something and try to deal with them for parts and shipping costs and/or shipping the unit back for repairs, you probably will miss most of that cold season as well as having to cough up a tidy sum for the repair and two-way shipping.

I believe I paid $379 for that heater. That for one season, is a hefty amount added to your already high heating costs. I will say in their defense, it was an attractive heater, gave the softest, best feeling heat I have ever experienced (Thanks to the infrared heat). The great advertising concerning saving you money on your heating bills is strictly a trick. If you turn your central system down low and use the heater only in the area where you want to keep warm, you no doubt can lower your heating bill as compared to the central system heating you entire house. But to infer that the heater puts forth more heat on less wattage is false.

Now, those are things I have gone over in my other articles in detail. What this one is about, is the similar heater, of which I was not aware. The lifeSMART renew 1500-watt Cool Touch Infrared Quartz Heater, (These are refurbished units) from all appearances and information, is a very similar product to the above mentioned pricey items. I have not owned one, have not even seen one, but there is little reason to believe this one is a lot different. But, a black metal case model can be bought for as little as $99.00 plus $5.00 shipping. Yes, it is missing the attractive wooden cabinet, but it is also available in some of those also, IF, you are willing to pay $150-$200 additional cost. That is where the majority of the cost comes in with the other brands.

The lifeSMART boasts a remote control, thermostat adjustment plus high and low settings. There is no high and low control, other than the thermostat itself. When this is set below 77 degrees, it runs on low (750 watts-about 2500 BTUs) If set above 77 degrees it will kick into high setting (1500 watts- about 5000 to 5100 BTUs). It has a 1 year warranty. The above mentioned refurbished model is available new for $150. If you would like to see a complete lineup of their different models, simply enter lifeSMART heaters into a search engine window and search for Nextags page in the listings pulled up.

There seems to be few reviews on these products. I only found one comment which stated: "These are great products and I was just talking to my parents about getting one of these a few days ago for their basement."

These heaters are available online at a number of places and are also available at a number of stores, such as Walmart, Home Depot, Target, and others. Prices vary. You might want to go to the Nextag website listed above which lists a number of dealers, both online and in retail outlets. It pays to shop around but is often easier to arrange returns, repairs, claims etc. at a local Store. I notice that Home Depot has a very similar line of heaters by ATI Heat Quest but are slightly more expensive than lifeSMART.

Joel--help! I was thinking about buying one of these heaters last winter and I'm considering it now too. I have an unfinished 500 square foot room above my garage that is used for storage and an exercise room. It has 2 wired baseboard heaters. I have more cats than I can handle up there now due to my wife saving a feral cat and her giving birth to 2 million felines. Anyway, while I am attempting to find homes for all those little suckers I'd like some heat for them. The baseboards really do not give out enough heat because of the lack of insulation. I have a whole house heating system that I do not have to use often as all our rooms have built in (baseboard) separate electrical heat. I do not want to turn on the whole house heater for the cats only. Should I spend money on one of these to help me out?

Hi Steve, thanks for reading and for the comment. You've kindly loaded me up on this one though. One of the main things you need, I think is one that is ultra safe. Left alone with a flock of kittens, it could be dangerous. I do not recommend one of the expensive infrared ones though, since most of your money goes for appearance rather than for heat. You might want to consider one of the good ceramic models. The cabinet never gets real hot and also, most have a setting lower than the 1500W. I hate to leave any plug in heater where it is going to draw 1500 watts of power on a steady basis. That is about all a wire and plug can carry without getting really hot. And unless the connection is very tight, they can overheat and cause a fire.

A lot depends upon where you live and how much heat is needed. If you can keep the cold from getting below about 45-50 degrees, cats can handle that pretty well. I believe I'd first get that mother cat spayed. :o)

Thanks for the good advice--less than 1500W and ceramic--I'll look into it. And yes spayed and now another one needs to be neutered.....yeah....

Thanks!
