Herman Cain, as every one is aware, is not an experienced politician. He is learning the ropes very fast though and handles his mistakes with honesty and clarity. He is a sure-fire conservative and tries not to leave any doubts about it.
Several days back Cain was being interviewed by Piers Morgan on CNN and Morgan asked him a hypothetical question of, should his daughter or granddaughter become pregnant by being raped, would he advise them not to get an abortion. It is not always easy to snap out an exact and precise answer on a quickie hypothetical question but here is what Cain said:
I admit that his reply sounds a bit flip-floppy but he came back with a reasonable explanation when confronted about it. Which he indeed was. Some bloggers even threw him under the bus and called him a pro-lifer. First read the following response he made to their queries then read my further comments about him:
“Yesterday in an interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, I was asked questions about abortion policy and the role of the President.
I understood the thrust of the question to ask whether that I, as president, would simply “order” people to not seek an abortion.
My answer was focused on the role of the President. The President has no constitutional authority to order any such action by anyone. That was the point I was trying to convey.”
But let’s see if there is evidence of his being pro-life or pro-abortion in his history. As everyone knows by now, he was an unusually successful businessman and pulled a couple of firms out of the doldrums and into thriving prosperity when they were about to collapse. He held high positions and earned a good income.
In 2006, he invested one million dollars of his own income into advertisements, read this:
“More and more African Americans are pro-life," Cain said in a statement LifeNews.com obtained. “Our message to African Americans is simple — it’s time you vote for candidates who support our values."
Cain will underscore that message with a $1 million advertising campaign in key states and congressional districts targeting black radio programs and urban radio stations young African Americans enjoy. Some of the ads focus on abortion. (Lifenews.com- 09/13/06)
Some bloggers who so quickly called him pro-choice have since apologized and have accepted his most recent remarks. Here are some individual statements he has made:
“My answer was focused on the role of the President. The President has no constitutional authority to order any such action by anyone. That was the point I was trying to convey. I am 100% pro-life, period.”
“I do not agree with abortion under any circumstances,” Cain told Meet the Press host David Gregory.
“Not for rape and incest,” he added, “because if you look at rape and incest, the percentage of those instances is so miniscule that there are other options.” (These remarks taken from Eurasia Review-10/23/2011)
Cain is still the man for the job. There is no question that he will be misquoted, misunderstood and trapped in any way possible. He can handle it.
