This Is My Latest Family

I was born into a wonderful family. My father’s people were farmers in the state of Georgia but migrated to Alabama where my grandfather purchased 80 acres of land. They continued to farm until the siblings all married and started their own individual families.

My mother was born in Cherokee County Alabama where her father and her siblings also farmed. Both families were poor people. My grandfather was married 4 times, each one dying at a relatively young age until the last one who out lived him.

My father, even though very poor and uneducated, had a brilliant mind which furnished us with a respectable living even though we remained in the poor classification. All blood links were English except for my paternal grandmother who was half English and half native American, either from the Cherokee or Creek tribes, both of which were found in the area of her birth.

My mother gave birth to 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls, however, two of the girls were either stillborn or died shortly after birth. My parents and all of their siblings are now deceased. Also, all of their children are now deceased except for me and a younger sister of mine.

My wife and children also were/are a close knit family. But now, for the past number of years, all of them are married and have their own families. My wife and I love them all, but we realize that, just as we did, they have their own lives to live and we try not to interfere.

We are content to live our lives as it comes to us and we are actually closer now than ever before. We have differing natures in some ways but we have learned to share each others desires. I learned shortly after we were married that our morning rising time was not similar.

I had, my entire life, gone to bed shortly after dark and arose while it still was. And to this day, when it gets to 4:00 A.M., I am not only awake, I’m wide awake and my feet are quickly on the floor. After she became pregnant with our first child, she became extremely nauseous and I asked her to quit her job and also to stay in bed a long as she liked and that I would make breakfast. I have done that since, and I fix hers also and leave it in the oven to stay warm.

But now to explain our latest family. We have been Christians most of our adult life, but in recent years we have attempted to be stronger workers in the Lord’s kingdom. We have helped in raising funds for missions and for native preachers in Kenya.

As we both enter the Winter of our lives, (Do not fail to click the link. It may explain our current life than we can do) we have also become closer to our brothers and sisters in Christ with whom we have more association than we are able to have with our own children who do not live close by. We have found more contentment and satisfaction in this undertaking, perhaps than we have had any where else.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7 KJV)

Yes, it does give a closer glimpse of you. You grew up a lot like my own father. He's now in a retirement community with many of his family and childhood friends, which I think is a great way for one to spend his or her 'winter'.

Thanks much Bruce, there were worlds of people who were in the same type of living in the early south. They had little to work with but some did outstanding jobs with so little. I always admired my father, but now that I'm even older than ever became, I realise more what a really great man he was. He had a third grade education now, and mind you he became one of the best and most sought after building construction men in the area. In 1937, Cherokee County proposed to build a new Courthouse., a 3 story structure with complicated details. The contractor who took the bid, hired my dad to over see the construction. It is still the courthouse.
