When I was born and growing up, if there were any daycare or nursery facilities anywhere, I was not aware of them. For the most part, mothers and siblings watched after the small ones, people who truly loved and cared for them. For that I am forever thankful. I know, and I understand perfectly that the world has changed to the point that in many cases, a man cannot earn enough to fully support his family and so, it becomes necessary to make some additional arrangements. This excuse, however, is often abused and children simply take second place to money and luxuries.
Let’s look at a few cases and give thought to the possibilities of harm to children. In March of this year, one Pennsylvania daycare was closed when the owner was arrested for the sale of illegal drugs.
Investigators who raided the facility found a littering of sex toys and pornography amid the dolls and building blocks in the play area. They also found $6,000 worth of crack cocaine and $4,000 in cash.
In 2009, a daycare owner in North Carolina was investigated on suspected drug trafficking and the investigators found 301 grams of crack cocaine and two guns in the facility. A 2 year old and a 13 month old were present when these were found.
In 2004, a four year old boy brought $10,000 worth of crack cocaine to his preschool class in Indianapolis. This incident, however, could happen at any facility, yet it is another incident of possible harm coming to a child.
Another instance in February of this year (2011), a day care operator in Houston, Texas left the building with 7 children inside and a pot of boiling oil on the stove. The resulting fire left four of the children dead from their injuries and the other three survived. The owner escaped and fled to Nigeria. She was captured there and returned home to stand trial. Details of this case can be found on my previous article # 706390
Also back in the 1980’s and 90’s there were some incidents of sexual abuse of children in daycare facilities. Predators such as these and drug peddlers are an ever present and increasing number of dangers one needs to not only pre-investigate but remain vigilant as long as their child remains in these facilities. Even if they are good, honest and clean people, they too must be extremely vigilant for any things small children may bring into the center.
