An Affliction So Many Have In America: Anosognosia

Anosognosia is not a new malady, but was named in 1914 by a neurologist, Joseph Babinski. It is a condition where a person is totally unaware of a personal problem or affliction regardless of the degree of debilitation.

Anosognosia is relatively common following brain injury (e.g. 10%–18% in the case of hemiplegia/hemiparesis after stroke), but can appear to occur in conjunction with virtually any neurological impairment. But, it is not related to global mental confusion, cognitive flexibility, or other major intellectual disturbance. Anosognosia can be selective in that an affected person with multiple impairments may seem unaware of only one handicap, while appearing to be fully aware of any others. Read more:

A disease such as dementia or Alzheimer’s is understandably unknown to the patient, yet single debilities unrelated to forgetfulness such as blindness referred to above, can occur with anosognosia.

Now with all that said, I suggest that it is manifested mostly unrecognized by the affected person as well as the general public. It is found in various peoples, races, and ethnics but is found in some 92% of politicians and in 84% of American voters. They are unable to see their lack of ability to reason, so long as they can remember the name of their party. There are those who will run blindly over the cliff following a political Pied Piper. Unable to see the disaster of going over the precipice.

There is some slight difference in political anosognosia and that of the normal type, in that they are willing to betray their friendships, their prosperity and spiritual well-being simply to ignore the more obvious.

Harry Reid utilized the “nuclear” procedure this past week, not for a life or death situation, but simply because he was angry and “unaware” of the possible and probable consequences of his action. It availed little and even Reid said he would probably live to regret it. One politician remarked, “Just wait until they are in the minority again.” So the blind anger prevails over and over again.

Regardless of one’s philosophy, anger is not the way to win friends and influence people. We need level heads in Washington. Those without anosognosia.

Hi Marijo, well the disease, or problem, is real. I just used it in politics to make a point. I can't understand at all, how a person could have several health problems and recognize them all except one, especially if that were blindness.

Yep there seems to be much of that going around these days - political blindness. Praying for all to have eyes to see and ears to hear....
