Birmingham’s U.S. District Court Judge L. Scott Coogler sentenced Janice J. Adams, 49, to one year and one day in prison on one count of embezzling about $67,973 from the City of Adamsville during 2009. She was also ordered to pay restitution to the city in the amount of $108,277, the amount she embezzled between August 2007 and February 2010, according to an FBI Press Release dated September 22, 2011. Her prison term is to start on January 3, 2012.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley said, “For government to function, citizens need to be able to place their trust in government officials. Violations of that trust have to be punished.” (FBI Press Release September 22, 2011)

Adamsville’s Mayor, Pam Palmer told Judge Coogler that Adams had been employed by the city for 30 years and had been the court clerk for over 20 years and this activity stunned the residents of the city who had fully trusted her. She added that some residents had been arrested and jailed for non-payment of court matters because Adams had taken the payments and had not recorded them. Se said also that the only way they could tell if one had paid was if they held a receipt for it.

“Mrs. Adams occupied an important position of trust in the City of Adamsville and she violated that trust by stealing public money over a prolonged period,” U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance said. “Although Mrs. Adams has expressed remorse and accepted a plea agreement that required her to pay the restitution to Adamsville, and to forfeit $108,277 to the government as proceeds of illegal activity, her crime warrants a prison term.” (Ibid)
