I recently wrote an article entitled The Technological Age: Is Utopia becoming achievable? You might want to read it to supplement this one on day dreaming of a future for our children, but only if…
You can track it down if you want, it is number 708307. But I keep running into more virtually unbelievable stuff that is occurring
My primary subject today has to do with wars, and winning them with much fewer losses. I read a day or so ago of the value of chain saws in Afghanistan. Heretofore, if a clump of trees furnished an ambush haven for the enemy, our troops used explosives to destroy such a spot. But that took considerable time, risk and made a lot of noise that could attract the enemy from miles away. But two or three men with chain saws are now being sent in wna destroying them faster, safer and not nearly as loud as the explosives…plus they cost much less than those explosives. (They might make good weapons if one got into hand to hand combat.)
But the really great one which promises to save many lives and cost much less is, that of the swiftly rising popularity of the unmanned drones. Those little jewels can search out enemy bunkers and hideouts, and take them out while the pilot is many miles away, even in a different country! Our people are continuing to improve their capabilities and their range. It is even possible for a CIA contingent to take out a terrorist stronghold without troops, from one hemisphere to another. That is amazing.
But with all great ideas, there are down sides. The countries who host these weapons almost invariably have strong complaints from their citizenry. Many peoples fear them when they are not understood. The expectation is that when our troops are fully withdrawn from Iraq, and as they are reduced in Afghanistan, the drones will stay. The strategy in handling that is going to be rather sticky.
One great thing about it, or so it seems to me, is that terrorists who have no American troops to kill will become very frustrated with being attacked from afar. Much more intense effort to keep them from infiltrating this country will necessarily have to be put forth.
