There are literally many thousands of quotes preserved from our forefathers and former statesmen. Many of these show profound wisdom and brilliance. If one spent a few months reading and considering these extremely beneficial thoughts it could not but improve ones intellect. I have read many and it is difficult to say who may or may not be the greater in their ability to express meaningful thoughts. Yet, my favorites because of the depth of their ideas and their ability to express them beautifully, must be the two mentioned in our title. You may find many more quotes from these men simply by placing their name and the word “quotes” in a search engine window.

Here are a few from Ronald Reagan: (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) 40th President of the United States.

Each generation goes further than the generation preceding it because it stands on the shoulders of that generation. You will have opportunities beyond anything we've ever known. (A truth seldom recognized-JHH)

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.

Freedom prospers when religion is vibrant and the rule of law under God is acknowledged.

Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.

Government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other. (What an accurate and delightful comparison! JHH)

How do you tell a communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.

I have wondered at times what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the US Congress. (One can be assured each would be loaded with amended conditions and earmarked pork…JHH)

I've never been able to understand why a Republican contributor is a 'fat cat' and a Democratic contributor of the same amount of money is a 'public-spirited philanthropist'. (Amen-JHH)

No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! (Again I say, Amen. There are enough, inflated, outdated programs in our government to easily balance our budget-JHH)

One way to make sure crime doesn't pay would be to let the government run it. (We are witnessing that becoming proven via the ‘gun-runner’ debacle-JHH)

Now here are a few from Daniel Webster which are worthy of our reading: (January 18, 1782 – October 24, 1852) Statesman and U.S. Senator from Massachusetts

From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant; give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy." (This one is very self explanatory-JHH)

"The proper function of a government is to make it easy for the people to do good, and difficult for them to do evil."

"There is nothing so powerful as truth - and often nothing so strange." (He might have added, “or so rare”-JHH)

"If religious books are not widely circulated among the masses in this country, I do not know what is going to become of us as a nation. If truth be not diffused, then error will be. If God and His Word are not known and received, the devil and his works will gain the ascendancy. If the evangelical volume does not reach every hamlet, the pages of a corrupt and licentious literature will. If the power of the gospel is not felt throughout the length and breadth of this land, anarchy and misrule, degradation and misery, corruption and darkness will reign without mitigation or end." (I wish I had said that-JHH)

"If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity." (A prophetic quote, now being fulfilled-JHH)

"Hold on, my friends, to the Constitution and to the Republic for which it stands. Miracles do not cluster and what has happened once in 6,000 years, may not happen again. Hold on to the Constitution, for if the American Constitution should fail, there will be anarchy throughout the world." (And still another of his prophecies being fulfilled-JHH)

Man is a special being, and if left to himself, in an isolated condition, would be one of the weakest creatures; but associated with his kind, he works wonders.

“If we and our posterity reject religious instruction and authority, violate the rules of eternal justice, trifle with the injunctions of morality, and recklessly destroy the political constitution which holds us together, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us, that shall bury all our glory in profound obscurity.”

I would that God might send us more great men of this calibre.
