Be sure, your sins will find you out! (Numbers 32:21). U.S. District Judge C. Lynwood Smith Jr. sentenced Diana Bellomo, 29, to 15 months in prison on August 4, 2011 for defrauding her employer, three counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud.

Bellomo had pleaded guilty to the charges in December 2010.She was employed by the Birmingham, Alabama based Liberty National Life Insurance Company. She admitted to having created and submitted 259 phony insurance applications to her employer from March through July of 2010.

She was manager of the insurance company’s Lakeworth, Florida branch where she received $83,814 in commissions on the fraudulent applications by her company. In addition to her 15 months in federal prison, the judge ordered her to pay that amount in restitution to Liberty National and also that amount to the federal government as proceeds from illegal activity.

According to court documents, Bellomo identified three companies in North Palm Beach, Fla., and submitted insurance applications on behalf of fictitious employees of those companies. She would e-mail the applications to Liberty National’s Birmingham headquarters. When applications were approved, the company would mail the documents to Florida. Liberty National also sent commission checks to Bellomo via the U.S. Postal Service. (FBI Birmingham Division Press release: August 4, 2011)

This announcement was released by U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley. The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney
