The Islamic religion is reportedly the second largest religion in the world with 1.5 billion followers according to the “Adherents.com” whose last update for them was September 2007. Of this figure, it is said that 87% are Sunni’s and 10% Shiites.
The Ahmadis, whose headquarters are in London, claims the group has more than 90 million* adherents world wide, although some Muslim sources deny that number. This group was founded in 1882 by a native of India named Mirza Ghulam Ahmad who claimed to be the messiah foretold by Muhammad. *(Ref. Click Here)
Never the less, they are rejected by the Sunnis and the Shiites. They are not allowed to be a member of the Britain Muslim Parliament or of the Muslim Council. A member of that Council, Iqbal Sacranie, made the following statement that the Muslim world sees the group as ''a cult operating outside the fold of Islam. The most serious point is that this cult does not recognize the finality of the Prophet Muhammad as the last and final messenger.''
After the death of Ahmad in 1908, the group split into two groups: (1) Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, and a smaller group, (2) Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement for the Propagation of Islam.
(1) The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a dynamic, fast growing international revival movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, it spans over 195 countries with membership exceeding tens of millions. Its current headquarters are in the United Kingdom.
Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long-awaited Messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) (1835-1908) of Qadian. Ahmad(as) claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus(as) of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad(sa). Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes that God sent Ahmad(as), like Jesus(as), to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad’s(as) advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival. He divested Islam of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings. He also recognized the noble teachings of the great religious founders and saints, including Zoroaster(as), Abraham(as), Moses(as), Jesus(as), Krishna(as), Buddha(as), Confucius(as), Lao Tzu and Guru Nanak, and explained how such teachings converged into the one true Islam. (2) Many Muslims do not consider members of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement to be Muslims and some group them together with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and refer to them by the term “Qadiani” and refer to their belief as “Qadianism”, a term rejected by Ahmadi-Muslims as derogatory.[3] Members of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement however like to refer to themselves as Lahori Ahmadi Muslims and consider themselves completely separate from Qadiani Ahmadis.
As the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement’s view regarding Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s status and the concept of finality of prophethood of Muhammad is closer to traditional Islamic thought, the Literature published by the Movement has found greater acceptability among the Muslim Intelligentsia[4][5] and some orthodox Islamic Scholars consider the Lahore Ahmadiyya as Muslims. These people suffer persecution for their differences quite severely in places such as Indonesia and Pakistan. Here is a brief quote from an article:
This is clearly happening because since 1982 you have had 15 brutal murders of Ahmadi doctors in Pakistan. The most recent murder happened on September 8, 2008, when Dr Abdul Mannan Siddiqi was killed. Therefore, a man of peace and a highly respected individual who helped the poor and all people who needed help, was killed in the name of radical Islam. This hatred is sadly growing and all minorities reside in fear and more alarmingly, to the haters of humanity, their list of so-called infidels appears to be growing.
