The first century after the founding of the United States of America, the country was relatively free of organized crime. There were crimes committed but mostly by individuals or limited conspiracies.
But beginning around the turn of the century into twentieth, small but mean groups began to form. A number of immigrants who found life difficult here in the new country and jobs were scarce, tried to turn to crime as a better way.
But the FBI grew in numbers and methods and a constant war of strength developed in the now huge operations including illicit drugs, much larger activities in prostitution and counterfeiting. With the growth of the larger cities, came coercion and shakedown operations. Almost any lucrative business became a target for the Mafia to at least gain a foothold. Organized labor became hotbeds for organized crimes. Killings of competitors were rampant.
The 1920’s and 1930’s were wild and notorious, causing the FBI, states and local police forces much misery and hazardous work. But as these forces were enlarged and strengthened with better equipment and training, they slowly began to disrupt much of the then operations. Most of the large organizations of the criminals were beginning to be put down during the early second half of the twentieth century.
Since that time, the scenario has been shifting to less highly organized groups to smaller ones. Now the prime factors of the organizations has become drugs and organized theft/robberies.
The FBI has grown large with highly trained agents, and very sophisticated equipment and methods. Some of the new electronics and techniques have enabled them to resolve crimes committed years ago when such equipment was not available.
The Birmingham, Alabama Field Office announced on January 5, 2011, the roundup and arrests of eleven individuals in connection with an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) case known as Operation Green Giant. They issued a press release stating that this organization operated out of the Brighton area of Jefferson County (The Birmingham area) and their activities were brought to the attention of local law enforcement agencies by affected residents. It was reported that there was sufficient traffic, to and around their place of business, to cause the local residents difficulty getting to and from their own homes.
After some two years of investigation by the FBI, they were able to locate these eleven individuals who were involved in the organization. Those indicted were:
Cameron Darnell White, age 20;
Corderell DeWayne Carson, age 22;
Dimitris Heckstall, age 18;
Gavin Darnell Walker, age 22;
Marion Jeray Campbell, age 24;
Marlon Earl Riggs, age 35;
Silanis Joseph Snedecor, age 38;
Kimberly Monique Warren, age 30;
Reco Darnell Walker, Jr., age 19
Anthony Bartae McGinnis, age 25;
Brandon Lane Moody, age 29;
They also indicted 3 others in the operation who are already serving time on other charges. They are:
Joel Dewayne Hall, age 33;
Demarcus Leshawn Whitt, age 23;
Carlos Antonio Riggs, age 33
An old saying once was known well, “The Canadian Royal Mounted Police always gets their man.” Our own FBI has advanced to the point they can almost boast that same claim. Of course, it was not true of the Canadian Mounted Police nor is it even nearly 100% accurate with the FBI, but their record is at least highly respectable. The above incident is only one small event. Their record of closing down large operations in the year 2010 is quite impressive.
