Although most have heard the term of "Homegrown Jihadist" or the "Homegrown Terrorist", but few are aware of the growth of this unexpected phenomenon in the western world. It occurs throughout the European continent as well as the Americas.

Germany has been spared of any severe act of violence from this source for the past decade, but their authorities know that the threat exists and are devoting much energy towards the locating and observation of those who show an interest in this. A quote from one of their official's articles follows:

"I had only been a Muslim for four months. But I knew my duty, I wanted to join the jihad. We followed the events in the jihad regions and watched films about how the mujaheddin fought against the crusaders. Hate grew in me", wrote German jihad fanatic and convert Eric Breininger in his diary in 2007. These words sound strange coming from the mouth of a young man with a thoroughly western lifestyle. "I lived exactly the life that a young person in the western world wants to live. But I couldn't find any purpose to life". But Eric Breininger didn't have much time to search for the meaning of life. On April 28th, 2010, he was killed in a skirmish between the Taliban and the Pakistani army. ("Fanatics In Our Midst:"-Dr. Kai Hirschmann, deputy director of the Institute for Terrorism Research and Security Policy. [IFTUS] in Essen, Germany).

The term of "Homegrown Terrorist" was first considered after the attacks in London on July 7, 2005. Those perpetrators were men born and raised in Great Britain, of Pakistani parents. While those who had participated in the 9/11 destruction of the World Trade Center, were non-natives but had lived here for a number of years in preparation of their attack.

Attempting to construct a descriptive pattern for these new jihadists has proven to be somewhat difficult, but it appears that the most likely candidates are similar to the Eric Breininger case above. Some show signs of being troubled or discontent. Some who have unsatisfactory religious experiences, etc. But not nearly all fit the pattern.

The unfortunate part is that many of these "recruiters" are infiltrating the western world, working steadily and are good at their job. They are difficult to discover. Many are utilizing the freedoms afforded them in the west to teach jihad against their benefactors. There have been a number of instances where this has been taught in their mosques.

Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, 39, was born in U.S. of Pakistani parents, showed only a few clues as to his true jihadist feelings and intentions until he killed 13 service men.

In March of this year, a Pennsylvania woman was charged with plotting to assassinate the Swedish cartoonist who drew "insulting" cartoons of Muhammad.

A man from North Carolina, Daniel Patrick Boyd was named as the leader of a terrorism group which planned to kidnap, kill and maim people in other countries in the name of jihad.

These are but a few of the incidents which have occurred and authorities are convinced that many more are now being planned. Just how successful the forces of the government police will be in discovering and stopping these plans before they are implemented is not known. Certainly not all will be.

Car bombing, both remote and suicidal, are sure to become more prevalent, right here in the U.S. But the question as to how long it takes those of the radicals to become suicide bombers is not established. Some, they say take many years to reach that level while others only take a few months or years.

Usually, the suicide bombers choose a crowded area where the maximum number of fatalities and injuries can be achieved. It is coming to the point that one would do well to try and avoid areas of dense crowding.

What kind of remark is that? The fact you remained anonymous, causes me to believe you meant it as criticism. But how do you figure I am beating the drums of war? And so what if I am? It is no worse than someone criticizing someone else's writing. Anonymously.

Fanatics grow from the seeds of dissatisfaction in their lives. It has been happening for centuries. In a world of instantaneous information the world now offers more to those whose life lacks fulfillment. We are at another crossroad in fanaticism and I do not see it calming for a long, long time.

Thank you Grace for reading and commenting on my article. You are right, the world seems to be losing touch with reality or something. I can hardly believe the things I read and hear each day. I continue to be thankful that I was born in 1930. For some reason or other, I believe this past eight-tenths of a century has been the best period since creation and possibly than ever will be again. As I grew up, everyone I knew was humble, poor but thankful for what they did have. They had compassion on one another. Now about all I see is arrogance, hatred and laziness. I can't imagine goodness ever really returning.  I sincerely hope that I am wrong. I have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren which I am deeply concerned for.
