Only a few countries currently observe Sharia law. Iran is one of them although not too much of what they do is known abroad.
A 43 year old woman, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was accused and convicted of an "illicit relationship outside marriage". She was sentenced to, and received 99 lashes for this crime. She then was arrested and tried for murdering her husband. She was acquitted on this charge.
The woman's 22 year old son, Sajad and her daughter, 17, Farideh, both contend that she was falsely accused and convicted from the beginning.
"She's innocent, she's been there for five years for doing nothing", Sajad said. He described the imminent execution as barbaric. "Imagining her, bound inside a deep hole in the ground, stoned to death, has been a nightmare for me and my sister for all these years." (Guardian.co.uk)
Under Sharia law, the death penalty by stoning requires that the condemned one be buried up to their neck (to the waist for men) and then stoned to death. The people attending the execution are then ordered to stone the person. If the person is able to free themselves (which seems very unlikely, especially for the women) the death sentence is then commuted.
Mina Ahadi, a human rights activist has helped Sakineh's children launch an international campaign to try and stop her execution, Ahadi, who has been involved in the matter for the past few years, says she knows of 12 other women's names who are awaiting execution by stoning there also.
