Iran following similar path to that of Sadam Hussein

Sadam Hussein might still be alive and in power had he not chosen a path of belligerence and deceit. Based upon his former cruelty and belligerent record of having zero tolerance of criticism and personal freedoms, he used poisonous gas on his own people killing literally thousands of innocent women and children.

He is known to have begun an effort to attain nuclear weapons until the United Nations pinned him down and placed International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors in his country. Even then, he played cat and mouse with them, refusing to allow them admission into certain suspected facilities. Time and time again he did this and seemingly raised questions and speculations purposely for little reason but to show that he could do it. Often new resolutions were passed by the United Nations to apply sanctions towards his nation, Iraq, which more often than not, caused more belligerence from him.

This went on for years until the U.S., Britain, and other nations felt the risk had become too great to ignore and they invaded Iraq. It turned out that he had actually abandoned his pursuit of nuclear weapons several years earlier, but his extreme lack of cooperation with the IAEA and the United Nations created his doom. President George Bush, acting on the known lack of cooperation and on flawed intelligence reports, rightly instigated the assault. He did it based on the best information he could get. Had he not taken action and later found that numerous terrorists had gotten access to nuclear weapons, there would have been much more criticism towards him than resulted in his preemptive attack.

Now Iran is absorbed in building enriched uranium and they are taking the same steps that Hussein did. After the fourth round of sanctions leveled upon them by the U.N., their belligerence is even growing stronger. The sanctions were agreed upon June 9 and Iran almost immediately expelled two of the IAEA inspectors for issuing a "false report".

Iran insists their uranium enrichment program is for peaceful purposes but the IAEA, the U.S., E.U. and others are convinced they are involved in higher enrichment than is necessary for "peaceful" purposes but is indeed for nuclear weapons.

The frequent boasts put forth by the president Mahmoud Ohmadinejad that they have a right to nuclear weapons, the supposed deep underground facility and their dire threats toward Israel leave little doubt as to his intentions.

It is highly unlikely that this scenario will change significantly in the near future. If it continues, it will surely amount to a showdown at some point. Israel will not sit idly by and watch Iran destroy them. When a showdown does become inevitable, the consequences will be calamitous. Some nations will continue to side with Iran, some with Israel. It will be an unpleasant time.

Great article. Have you heard whether Iran has been able to spread their resources around, harden them to attack, camouflage them, etc, to make an air attack from Israel less effective? Could Israel do the job if they wanted to?

Thank you for your comment Christofer. No, I am not positive about any of your questions. I personally believe Israel has the intelligence sources to know where everything stands at the present. I also have confidence they have the military power and know-how to knock Iran's facility out if it comes to it. But...what happens after that, is anyone's guess.
