Sydney, Australia authorities are installing 10 safety cameras across the city to catch speeders and other law breakers, such as running red lights. They plan to install up to 200 of them over the next four years.
The city ventured into this project slowly and installed only one to begin with at the corner of Cumberland Highway and St. Johns Road in Canley Heights. To their surprise, it has collected more than $2,000 per day in fines. According to the Daily Telegraph in Sydney, the one camera has captured 785 violators with fines amounting to $265,330 between January 19 and May 30.
The city has had cameras for several years but not these advanced digital models which are highly technical and produce more and better data much quicker than the other methods.
The additional revenue is not the prime reason for the new technology according to ATR officials but safety is their prime purpose. A number of crashes occur daily in Sydney with frequent fatalities.
The moral of this story is, observe the speed limit when visiting Sidney.
