6.9 Earthquake In Western China Today, Kills 400+, Injures Thousands

A series of shocks measuring up to 6.9 shook western China around 8:01 A.M., in their time zone, ( about 2:00 A.M. here in the CST) destroyed a number of homes and badly damaged at least two schools in China's Qinghai Province in the Tibetan plateau.

Authorities state that an early count shows at least 400 dead and more expected, with multiple injuries in the thousands. One vocational school collapsed and 50 people were extracted from the destroyed building but only three survived.

The hardest hit town in this region was Jiegu Town with a population of some 67,000, almost all of which are of Tibetan ethnicity. It is the capital town of Qinghai's Yushu County. The town's elementary school also collapsed and one witness said he had seen six or seven dead Tibetan children in the school area.

It is reported that a dam above the town sustained cracks and is leaking, causing some residents to flee the area for fear it will collapse.

This is at least the sixth "significant" earthquake world wide since the beginning of 2010. Small earthquakes occur daily around the world, but six of this magnitude seems somewhat excessive for a three and one-half month period.

Some may try and show that this type of regularity of large quakes are fulfillment of biblical prophesy, but seemingly this is unfounded. Earthquake history, when examined, is rather startling. They are nothing new and occur on a daily basis. It would be difficult to show that this present surge in strong ones are very much out of the ordinary. Nor does the Bible indicate any frequency or strength in them.

The only thing it seems is that violent shaking of the earth does indeed affect other faults and perhaps triggers a new quake shortly after they hit, depending upon the current condition and position of the underground faults.
