There are many people who profess to be Christians and perhaps have attended religious services for years and then simply stop. Others who are truly striving to live a Christian life are understandably concerned for them. And the primary questions is, Why would anyone do that'? The reasons are many as has been learned through out the years.
Briefly, we will list His reasonings. First He lets it be known that the seed' referred to is His word. And the first example given is that which fell by the wayside where fowls came and devoured them. Of course these could not germinate and become a part of His church or kingdom These fowls could be characterized in several ways.
Verses 5 and 6 say this: "Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away."
Jesus explains this one as those who readily accept his word but when he is faced with tribulation or persecution, he chooses to abandon it.
Next, in verse 7, he gives this type: "And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them"
In His explanation of this verse, He says these also heard his word but the cares of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches overcome the desire to follow Him. When we look closely at the reasons modern man give for their excuses for leaving His kingdom, they usually can be compared to that which he mentions here.
A Baptist based group called the LifeWay Christian Resources took a survey a year or so ago of 469 adults who had formerly been church going Christians' but had left and no longer pursued their religion, were asked why.
Some simply said they had become too busy (?) Too busy to worship and serve God who had sent His only Son to die for us. And too busy' can almost always be shown to be inaccurate. It finally boils down to the choice of priorities. If, for instance, you might fall into this category, consider how many hours you spend watching TV, participating in sports, of many other such items. If you are honest, the lack of time will prove to be a dishonest excuse.
Others indicated they simply had too many responsibilities at home and at work to be active Christians. Again, priorities are in need of re-organization.
Some indicated that they became bored or unhappy with the formalities of worship and such activities of the church. Some were unhappy about some of the decisions of the elders or deacons and of boring sermons, etc. This is a self-inflicted problem. Study and pray and keep your mind on God and His word and strive to become an avid helper rather than a bored hindrance to the church.
If one will only be honest with themselves, there is no legitimate reason to forsake God and His Son, the church which was established by Jesus' suffering for us. It is only one's choice. It is not someone else's fault. When we stand before God in judgment, our efforts to defend ourselves of our lack of duty will result only in hearing, "I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity". (Matthew 7:23)
