400 Civil Servants In Bulgaria Found Cheating; A Lesson In Christianity

A Reuters article caught my eye this morning. The gist of the article was that the government in Bulgaria, due to the current economic depression in their country, was leaving no stone unturned in search of revenue. So they decided to investigate their own civil servants for tax evasion or whatever might be going on.
According to the article, over four hundred tax inspectors were holding unpaid traffic tickets. The fines will be withheld from their paychecks. But they've only started. They have some 50,000 civil servants which will be investigated in March for tax evasion and unpaid fines. One European Union member said, "It is good to see things happening in Bulgaria, but so far it has only targeted small fry."
But also, I was thinking of any parallel of this to biblical incidents and the first thing that I thought of was Numbers 32:23... "But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out."
Of course Moses was speaking to the two tribes who wanted to stay on the eastern side of Jordan rather than cross it and make their home in Canaan where God had promised them. They had agreed, however, that they would cross over and help conquer the promised land, then, and only then, return to their chosen spots to locate their tribes. To which, Moses agreed but admonished them if they should renege on their agreement.
Many people unfortunately, think as long as they can evade the civil law, and/or their friends and religious associates, they will be home free. Not! I can recall a song since I was a small child (quite a while back) that had a phrase in it, "there's an all seeing eye, watching you." I wasn't old enough then to comprehend the real meaning of it and I can recall that it kindly bothered me.
But, the fact is, it is truth. I learned later that God is Spirit. That he knows everything that is knowable, He is omniscient, He is omnipotent and He is omnipresent. So it is Him that we should be concerned about when we decide to cheat on our taxes, or fail to meet our honest obligations in any way. You might go through life after some horrific crime, but just re-read the last phrase of Moses words above.

Top-level comments on this article: (6 total)I could say the same up here in Canada - if we could get everyone to pay off what they owe for fines - our national debt would probably be paid off - even with the recession.Thank you for reading and commenting, Tammy. I know exactly what you mean. I believe the majority of our president's appointies came on board owing thouusands of dollars in taxes. I have an idea it would be an enormous amount if we only knew what all the government has been beaten out of, by our vast number of civil servants.
Good article! In other words, "to thine own self be true"Thanks for reading and commenting, Janet. (?) Let's see...are you related to Jack? Maybe married to him?
Good observation Joel- Anytime the government decides to make a show of "doing something," about a problem, you may notice that they always only target the small fry. The big fry pay their paychecks- they're not going to hoist themselves on their own petard! Good article- Thanks- Always- EllaThank you Ella, for reading and commenting. I thoroughly agree with you.
Great article. Sounds like something we would talk about at poker.Thank you Neil, for reading and commenting.
MARANATHA - only then will we have GOOD government, eh?I agree, thanks for your comment Marijo.
Good article Joel. I think you might be right about the US collecting on unpaid parking tickets especially from the UN, lawmakers, etc.I'm pretty sure it would help a lot. Thanks for commenting Linda.
