Newton Leroy McPherson was born June 17, 1943 in Harrisburg Pennsylvania to Newton Searles McPherson and Kathleen Daugherty who were married in 1942. The young couple, aged nineteen and sixteen, did not remain together and the mother raised Newt alone until she later married Robert Gingrich who adopted him and gave him the name of Gingrich. They subsequently had a daughter, half sister to Newt.
Newt ran unsuccessfully for a U.S. Representative seat from Georgia's sixth district twice (1974 and 1976) against an entrenched Democrat who had held the position for years. The incumbent, Jack Flynt, chose not to run in 1978, and Gingrich defeated the Democratic challenger by some 9% points. He was re-elected 10 times. He was made the Minority Whip in 1989. He has been reported recently to say that he is now testing the water and discussing with his family, the possibility of running for president in 2012.
1992 was a Democrat year and the advent of Bill Clinton years. A Democrat president and a Democrat congress. The next two years Newt, with help from other members of the House got together and drew up a plan which they called "Contract with America". It spelled out the plans Republicans had if they became the majority party and assured the voting public of their devotion to fulfilling those things. That, plus a high degree of opposition to an extremely expensive healthcare plan being proposed and pushed by the then First Lady, Hillary Clinton. This gave the both houses back to a Republican majority. A close study of the "Contract with America" and the results show, and prove, a lot of what could be done in politics which would satisfy the American public.
Bill Clinton held the office of President, and he did a fairly good job, yet he has received much credit for things which occurred more directly from the strength of the "Contract with America". Definitely, to his credit, he went along with much of the good legislation which was passed by that congress. But not all. A few of he bills were killed in committee, Bill Clinton vetoed a few, and a few failed to pass in the senate. But all in all, it was responsible for the first balanced budget in many years and placed other good actions into effect.
Gingrich has proven his extraordinary intellectual and creative abilities. And is one of the best informed of politicians. He, like most of those who run for public office it seems, has points of criticism in his personal life. He is married to his third wife and was reportedly having affairs while married to the first two. He has made a number of formidable enemies during his political career and may face harshly negative publicity during a campaign if he does choose to run.
The reader may be enlightened somewhat as to just what an extraordinary contract this was. Had the Senate and the President bought into this and carried it out. This nation would surely be in a much better position than it now is. I encourage all of you to read the contact itself at: http://hebronics.org/government/contractamer.html

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)One thing about Gingrich is that he speaks in plain, straight forward language and treats the audience as though they are intelligent people. Perhaps it's his experience as a teacher that enables him to speak to the audience and not under them.
Most other politicians from all portions of the political spectrum like to speak in meaningless, fluff. This has been a complaint of mine for years. They speak to the lowest common denominator using lofty language but, by the end of the speech, they've really said very little of significance. It's like drinking alcohol-free light beer. All flavor and no substance.
Thank you Stephen, for your comment. I agree with you. I think the reason Newt speaks so straight is simply because he is a very intelligent man. He is not full of harsh criticism and name calling, he simply tells it like it is, straighforward. Frankly, I'd love to see him become president. I've written him and encouraged him to run and even urged him to try and convince Condoleeza Rice as his running mate. Whether or not people like them, we'd have some intelligence in the administration instead of a mafia mindset. You might want to read the article I've just posted concerning the "Contract With America."
Hum.... I like him but thought he had too much baggage....who knows - like his plain talking! Thanks Marijo. You may be right. I worry about it. I believe he is about as knowledgeable as any politician I've seen. I mentioned that in my article, but didn't go into detail. If he should be too overloaded, I hope he doesn't block some other good man.OR woman! If the first woman president would happen to be republican I would try a cart wheel!
