Malaysia is a country in southeast Asia which is known for their corporal punishment by caning for certain crimes, under their Shariah law. They have, however, been hesitant to apply this method to women.
Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, a 32 year old lady who worked as a nurse in Singapore but began part time work as a model after losing her job as nurse, is married and the mother of two. She was arrested while visiting in Malaysia from Singapore for drinking beer in a public place two years ago. The Sharia Court sentenced with a $1,400 fine and 6 strokes rattan cane.
When brought before the court, Shukarno pleaded guilty, she paid the fine of $1,400 and asked that her caning, the first one sentenced to a woman in Malaysia, be done in public.
On Monday, August 24, the police arrived in a van and took her into custody. She hugged her children, a son with cerebral palsy and a daughter with a heart condition, and they took her away to prison, where the caning would be administered within seven days. However, an official told them to bring her back home and the caning would be postponed until after the month of Ramadan.
Two other people were sentenced to the same punishment but have appealed the sentence while Shukarno did not. Since that time, there have been considerable objections voiced to the authorities to commute her sentence. The court has now postponed the caning indefinitely which probably is the final resolution.
Prime Minister Najib Razak, meanwhile, urged the 32-year-old mother of two, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, to appeal her sentence, in the strongest sign yet that the Malaysian government was seeking to head off a punishment that could badly damage its international reputation.(Islamic Court Halts Caning In Malaysia: James Hookway, The Wall Street Journal)

Every other major religion has had a reformation but not Islam. The hypocrisy is astounding. A 6th century set of mores in the 21st century. Thanks for your comment Jim. I agree with you.
