It has been seven years since John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo went on a killing spree. The pair were convicted of shooting thirteen people, ten of which died during a three week period. There is evidence that they may have killed a number of others. There are some fourteen more shootings which have come into the investigation that occurred as the duo traveled across the nation and ended up in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland area where the thirteen cases occurred of which they were charged.
It appears these men (Malvo was a teen-ager during this period) simply wanted to kill others. In a few of the cases, robbery seemed to be connected, possibly only to fund their efforts. Their three week spree began on September 5, 2002 as Mr. Paul LaRuffa was leaving his pizzeria in Clinton Maryland at the end of the day. He had entered his automobile when bullets shattered his window and he took 5 rounds from a .22 caliber pistol, in his chest, arm and back. Mr. LaRuffa remembers seeing a boy approaching his vehicle, wearing a hooded jacket which had these words written on it: "I only have to be nice to one person a day. Today's not your day"
Malvo and Muhammad took $3,500 and a laptop computer from Mr. LaRuffa. It was learned that Muhammad purchased the Chevrolet Caprice in which they fashioned a sniper's "nest". It was arranged where a person could prostrate themselves and fire through an opening of the trunk lid while the other sat ready to speed away.
Because of his age, Malvo was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. It was never completely resolved who pulled the trigger in most of the killings. Malvo at one time said that he was the one who did the shootings. But later said that Muhammad did most of them.
Muhammad was given the death sentence and now, after seven years of appeals and requests for clemency have failed, he is scheduled to die tonight at 9 P.M. by lethal injection at the Greensville Correction Centre in Richmond, Virginia. Muhammad was given his choice of the electric chair or lethal injection but refused to make the decision. It was then directed that he be given a lethal injection.
Possibly this brings closure, of sorts, to the deaths of these people but it doesn't explain why, to those loved ones left behind. Here is an excerpt of a day in the lives of these two men:
Early on October 3 a landscape gardener was shot in a Maryland suburb near Washington, also with a .223-caliber bullet. Then a taxi driver was murdered at a nearby petrol station. Half an hour later a woman was killed as she sat reading on an outdoor bench. Within 90 minutes Mrs Lewis-Rivera was shot while she vacuumed the van.
At 9.15pm the snipers cut down Pascal Charlot, a 72-year-old retired carpenter, while he walked along a road in Washington. The next day Caroline Seawell was shot and wounded as she loaded her minivan in Fredericksburg, Virginia, 50 miles from Washington. (Tim Reid, Washington, TimesOnline.co.uk 11-10-2009)
