According to the D.C. HIV/AIDS Administration's 2008 epidemiology report, it has a higher percentage than Uganda. Three percent of the entire area is infected with the HIV. That is three out of every hundred people. One out of about every 33. And listen to this, in the age group of 40-50, one in ten is infected!

Authorities say that every neighborhood, every race and sex is impacted by this 22 percent surge from the 2007 level. They reported that black men had the highest percentage at 7% while black women had the average of 3%. Following the cause of men having sex with men, it is then heterosexually transmitted and also by needle injection of drugs using the same needle.

Of those who tested positive, it is reported that men having sex with other men accounted for 36.9%, heterosexual sex 28.1%, drug injection 18.2%, unidentified risk 13.1%, homosexual and drug injection exposure 3.2% and other causes 0.5%. Other causes include blood transfusion, occupational exposure, etc.

The report also warned that these figures only include those tested and they contend that the actual number would definitely be higher. The study also revealed that only 3 in10 of those interviewed had used a condom in their last sexual encounter. The study also indicates that the disease is considered to be in epidemic proportions.

Interesting…  I just came out of a meeting on the fight against HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.  UNAIDS just released the 2008 Report on the global AIDS epidemic.

According to the report, Swaziland has so far the highest HIV/AIDS adult prevalence rate(%) with 26.1; Botswana 23.9; Lesotho 23.1; Malawi 11.9; Mozambique 12.5; South Africa 18.1; Namibia 15.3; Zambia 15.2; Zimbabwe 15.3; Central Africa 6.3; Tanzania 6.2; Gabon 5.9.

Uganda’s adult prevalence rate is 5.4.  I’d think that if you wanted to site the gravity of the problem in DC, you’d site one of the countries with the fastest rising infection rates not one with one of the fastest falling infection rates.  It defeats the point you want to highlight about the rising HIV infection rate in DC. But I understand.  It’s good for Google search engine (I checked).  It’s not by accident that Britain’s World war II prime minister, Sir Winston Churchill proclaimed Uganda the “Pearl of Africa”.  It’s my home… It's also the Source of the Biblically famous River Nile .. :-)

Just to be clear here.  I don't even believe UNAIDS Stats.  You might want to check my article, "In This Time Of AIDS Crisis Silence Is Suicidal."

Hi Christine, thank you for writing and clarifying the AIDS situation. I can see that I did not do enough research. If you will Google my title you will see that some paper started the story I wrote, and it is all over the internet now, I believe it was the Washington Post who originally wrote it. I hope you won't feel hard with me about it. I had no intention of demeaning Uganda. I have no acquaintences there, but I do in Kenya and Tanzania.

Joel, NO hard feelings at all. I did a google search before I posted my comment and saw quite a few hits high on Google search engine that said the same thing: Uganda has the highest HIV infection rate in the world. I jokingly included Uganda’s popularity rating in the last bit of my comment but it probably didn’t come out that way.

A few people I know in the UN and WHO say the infection rate in some parts of the USA may actually be so much higher than in many parts of Africa because of the method of transmission.  Many African countries do not have high incidence of homosexual and drug injection exposure which accounts for a large percentage of those infected in the USA.  Also as you may note in my article, different methods of data collection are used in Africa and in the West.  But of course the Washington Post won't report that fact ..:-)
