In the early part of January, cases of Salmonella were reported, to which the FDA quickly began an investigation and found contamination in certain brands of snack crackers and other itmes containing peanut butter. Among some of the first were little known brands and some chain groceries store brands of cookies, cakes and snacks containing peanut butter or peanut paste. The brands and items continue to grow to this day. So it is very wise to avoid any products containing peanuts in any form unless you are positive where the peanut products came from. Further investigation discovered that the salmonella contamination came from a large plant in Blakely Georgia of the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA).

The amount of peanut products distributed by this plant boggles one's mind and more and more products are being recalled due to this vast amount of peanut materials. Read this paragraph taken from the FDA's own page:

Peanut butter is sold by PCA in bulk containers ranging in size from five (5) to 1,700 pounds. The peanut paste is sold in sizes ranging from 35-pound containers to product sold by the tanker container. Neither of these products is sold directly to consumers.
However, through its investigation, FDA has determined that PCA distributed potentially contaminated product to more than 100 consignee firms, for use as an ingredient in hundreds of different products, such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream.
Much of these peanut products were also sold to Canadian food producers. The list of products having been, or are now being, recalled is massive. below here is the link to the FDA listing of products and also the link to the Canadian recalled lists.

So, just because you are not sick or dead yet, don't feel free to indulge in whatever peanut products you see, even the ones you may have been eating. Not all of every product has been contaminated, but don't play Russian Roulette until you discover some contamination.

I love peanut butter. But it won't hurt to wait and see who all is involved in this before committing Hari-Kari.

Joel, I agree with you....I for one am not going to indulge in peanut butter products until I know that the Salmonella is under control, and accounted for, not worth dying over for sure..Very informative article,  and I appreciate you sharing it with us, and thanks for the links....Your friend in pen, Gary

Thanks Gary, for commenting. I always buy Smuckers natural peanut butter which I know is produced by them, so I am still eating that but I am shying away from snacks, cakes, cookies and candies with it in them. Very few of those type manufacturers, produce their own peanut butter. Read the FDA's findings at that plant. It is on that same website listed above.
