Intuition: What's It All About?

Intuition is referred to a lot, but just what is it? Does it actually exist? Probably 95% of the people will answer with a resounding "YES"! But stop and think about it for a minute. Name an instance that you can prove it.
Answers, online dictionary defines it:
(1) The act or faculty of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes;
(3) A sense of something not evident or deducible; an impression.
Have you ever heard someone say, "I just had a gut feeling something like this was going to happen."? But did they really have an underlying reason to believe such? Take for instance, you hire a new employee to handle delicate merchandise and later he drops and breaks a batch of the products. It would be easy to say, I just had a gut feeling this was going to happen. Or was the gut feeling brought on by your observance that the individual showed a bit of awkwardness or light touch of carelessness. And sub-consciously you harbored a fear. That is not intuition. That is knowledge that carelessness or lack of coordination just doesn't mix with china or crystal displays.
It is seemingly impossible for the finite mind of humans to understand those things which occur outside of our realm of physical, natural laws. It brings us to the precipice of our understanding and we fail to comprehend what is over that precipice. It is entirely possible that man's mind may have a capacity for intuition. I have stated in other articles, and probably only those of the Christian faith will agree with me, and some of them may not. The mind of man is his soul. It is his life. The body functions because of this mind or spirit. The interdependency of the body and soul sustains one and limits the other. The mind is limited to the capacity of the physical brain. The intricate trails formed by electrical circuits and other things we do not understand, gives our mind the ability to utilize just so much of the total capabilities of that mind. When the body and mind are separated, at the death of the body, our minds will have unimaginable knowledge. Not infinite knowledge, but far beyond that which we have now.
Here is one explanation of intuition: Whether we call it gut feelings, a sixth sense,' or something else, we have all experienced intuition at one time or another. Of course, gut feelings are often wrong (how many times during aircraft turbulence have you been sure your plane was going down?), but they do seem to be right much of the time. Psychologists note that people subconsciously pick up information about the world around us, leading us to seemingly sense or know information without knowing how or why we know it. But cases of intuition are difficult to prove or study, and psychology may only be part of the answer. (intuition: livescience.com)
We all know that there are things that happen, experiences someone has, and so on, but it seems impossible to track down facts concerning intuition. We also know that humans as well as animals and insects of all types, have inborn instincts. These are just as puzzling as possible intuition. They are, however, much more obvious and amazing.

Top-level comments on this article: (3 total)Instances of Intuition require a challenge.I once worked under a person with whom I shared some of my intuitive events.He ALWAYS had a perfectly rational explanation dismissing unworldly phenomena.He was the epitome of the Devil's Advocate.Wouldn't this strengthen one's spiritual beliefs?
Hi Joel.I've always figured intuition was just the brain working away, cataloguing, comparing, and extrapolating, all behind the scenes. Finally, when it gets it all together, it wraps it up into a neat little box and ships it to your consciousness. Like a package in the mail, they don't always arrive in a timely manner and may not be in quite the pristine condition they were in when they were first sent out.The back of my mind had to send me the same dream three times before I finally took my car in to have the brakes checked. The repair guy told me I was "this close" to not being able to stop my car at all. Hunh!On the other hand, once before entering the 7th grade and going to a new campus, I dreamed about the new school. It was very detailed. Imagine my surprise to get off the bus on orientation day to find that it matched my dream exactly and that I already knew where everything was. I could hardly believe it.The rational part of me likes my first explanation. The part of me that loves science fiction, some fantasy, thinks the world would be more interesting if space aliens came to visit and if ghosts really walked the earth likes to think there is something more to it. Do you think we will ever know?Thanks, Joel, for another great read.Dianne
Hi Joel, no matter our brains are incredible and just think, we only use a small portion of it! I wonder if we will have full use of it when we have our glorified bodies. I love how you ended this piece with the words of David. How appropriate.Another thing that is interesting is De Javue (spell?) Wierd, unexplainable stuff our minds can do :-) Blessings to you and yours. TeresaHi Teresa,Yes, David was right, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I am sure we will have full use of our mind because there will be no physical brain to restrict it. Our glorified body will be strictly spirit. The thoughts of this gets very deep when you consider it.Those little children who are born defective, either mentally or physically, will be full grown spirits with no deficiencies. Those little unborn aborted babies will be full grown spriits standing to witness against their mothers and the doctors.That's heavy, man. Thanks for reading and commenting.
