The U.S. Didn't Need Blagojevich Now

The scandal of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich could not have broken into the news at a worse time. Without meaning to convict the man or to exonerate him, I wish it had not taken place right now. We have the most dreadful task ahead of us presently trying to bring this country out of a disastrous economic period, a transition from one president to a new one, diligence necessary for our national security from terrorists, rampant unemployment, dead housing market and more. Our nation's leaders do not need the distraction of such as this trying to make decisions as to what to do about him, while he promises to bring down numerous others with him.

Congress is facing the worst dilemma imaginable in trying to get this economy going. Trying to feed multiple billions of dollars into the hands of greedy and incompetent people. The $700 billion which was first set aside for the banking industry and disputed by many from day one is proving they were right. So far it has accomplished nothing. It doesn't matter that Paulson says it would have been worse without it. He has no idea if it would or not. The executives of AIG blew thousands of their hand out funds in trips to retreats and wild living and then were brazen enough to say it was no ones business how their funds were used. Now, we have the three auto makers crying for a handout when it is utterly impossible for them to compete, and they know it, with those foreign owned automakers whose labor costs are approximately half that of the big 3. Yet the salaries and benefits of those companies are above average for production workers in most industries. Now something stinks here. If their total compensation is above average and yet the big 3 employees must have twice that!

The Illinois political scene has, for over a century, been notorious for its crime and corruption. Chicago was for many years, the mafia headquarters and politics have been influenced by it. Blagojevich's predecessor, former Governor George Ryan is currently serving a six year, six month term in federal prison, Terre Haute, Indiana on federal corruption convictions, beginning November 2007. And these two governors are by no means the only ones. Governor Daniel Walker, after leaving office in 1977, was imprisoned for bank fraud, perjury and misapplication of funds.

Blagojevich first filled the congressional seat of Dan Rostenkowski after he was convicted for mail fraud. Interestingly, he ran for both offices as a "reformer". It will amaze one to dig into the Illinois and Chicago political history. The state politics are rated by many as the most corrupt state in the nation and the governor's office as the most corrupt political office in America. It will be interesting to see just how far reaching this fellow's promise to "bring others down with him" will go.

Our other critical issues are more frightening than those of the Illinois political crisis. Our indebtedness has us stretched to the limit it appears to me, yet our nation's leaders are doing what they do best, going at the problem backwards. Had all of this $700 billion been distributed to the taxpayers in the form of funds which must be spent towards their mortgages, new automobiles and other products, no savings of it allowed, you would now be seeing the economy in a tremendously better condition. It will be of no value whatsoever to infuse money into the auto makers when the public is unable to buy new autos. That does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

I have read several articles from Russia's English version of Pravda and they are snickering up their sleeves at our predicament. One official states that America is a pyramid that must collapse. It has emboldened them to the point they now say that U.S., Soviet relations are now back into the "Cold War" mode. They, China and India are trying to form an alliance. All of this brings us back to the point of my article title...We didn't need this right now.

Great article, Hebron. Greed and dishonesty in all corners of our government and large companies (ie., Ford, GM, Enron--and on and on) has been the biggest contributor to our country's economic woes. And it certainly won't end here. For every honest man/woman there are two dishonest.

Thanks for sharing.

Dear Hebron,

I agree with you but might I give you a piece of advice? In writing articles, I am cutting down the size of my paragraphs for 'computer' reasons -- certainly not for good writing skills. Yours is a scholarly piece. When many are searching for information, they often don't want to read an article with long paragraphs. So, I divide my paragraphs to try to keep their attention. Just a thought.
