Knife Scanners At School Gates…Has It Come To This?

"Airport-style metal detectors will be installed at hundreds of school gates under sweeping measures to confront the growing problem of teenage knife crime." The Observer (Mark Townsend and Jo Revill Sunday January 20, 2008)

Some schools have already given police broad powers to seize knives but they feel that the metal detectors will be less intrusive and more acceptable to the community. This report from the United Kingdom's Observer-Guardian shows that not only the U.S. but Britain as well has severe problems with violence, especially in some neighborhood schools. This move is being made due to a rash of stabbings in the "rough" secondary schools, the latest a little thirteen year old girl was stabbed in the chest and thigh as she left school for the day, last week.

Schools will be issued the "arches" on the basis of past violent events and some larger schools will get several of the walk through detectors. It is reported that these detectors will cost the school system about 5,000 each. All children entering these particular schools will be required to pass through the scanner so as to avoid accusations that stereotypes are being targeted.

I am not writing this article to criticize Great Britain for taking this step, not in the least. They need to. My article is, rather, to question why we have arrived at such a point in civilization (?). I knowwe older coots have our own remedies for the ills that are rampant in society today. But the fact of the matter is, many of the now outdated methods used back then, worked! But rest assured, the worst is yet to come. Of course there are many different things which have entered into the raising of these delinquents, yet most of them can be categorized in one large reason. The abandonment of teaching children sound Christian principles. (principle: A rule or standard, especially of good behavior: a man of principle. The collectivity of moral or ethical standards or judgments).

Tell me how much time do you feel that most people devote to training (not just telling) their children to respect others, more especially people of authority, elderly, YOU, God, the Holy Bible with it's teachings and yes, even themselves? What percentage of parents these days do you believe gather the family together each evening to have a 30 minute session of reading the Bible and discussing what was read, and why? How many people do you suspect, after reading that previous question, said, "Oh, come on now, surely your are kidding". I'm not kidding. How many of these knife carrying stabbers do you reckon are church goers? What percentage of their parents are?

Anytime I happen to get involved in a dialogue with an atheist and mention anything about the moral and ethical restraints contained in the Bible, they almost always become indignant and ask if I think they are immoral or unethical. My reply is always that, if they are not, then they have been taught biblical principles or at least influenced by them. They are not natural instincts.

Do you think that those who are being brought up today without respect for anyone, even parents, will maybe train their children to be respectful and observe moral and ethical values? Not on your life.

hi joel. i have been concerned about this for the past couple of years. our school has an officer on duty all the time. someone left a bomb on a bus a few months ago, but it was a dud. they then had a full evacuation, with police, dogs, bomb squad, rescue squad, and now i get a letter today that the teacher that was in question has been let go-only i didn't hear the question....it's scary. even though i can say in 2 years i will be done with schooling for my kids, i will have grandchildren that will go these schools. it's a sad state of affairs, thank you for a good article, best regards, sue

Hi Sue, thanks for the comments. I reckon I am a professional pessimist but I cannot see things getting better in this respect or even maintaining the status quo. I firmly believe something extremely bad is going to come from all this. Drastic preventive measures such as this may keep down some of it but it does nothing to change the delinquents mind or lifestyle. They will simply look for some other way...and find it. I foresee anarchy here in the U.S. as well as Britain and many other politically correct nations. Criminals are babied and pampered because of the ACLU standing up for them no matter what the crime or circumstance. While the victim and family received no mercy at the hand of the criminal.

Ok Joel just no disrespect intended but just where has everyone been? A lack of respect, gangs, cursing, sex and everything else has exploded in our schools to the point where teachers fear to impose any discipline. Remember the flick "Blackboard Jungle" well that is all over now. In surbubia with their not my child mentality and even worse in the inner cities. Just spend sometime in school and check it out. Teachers, well most apply discipline goes to the good ones that get out of line every now and then because they do the time, as they say and do not give them trouble. Yes and you want to know what is happening? Good luck. If you find that good school out there without these type of issues, and I am sure there are some, let us know.

Hi Robert, I'm a poor writer but I don't know what I said to make you think that I've been blind to this up to now. I have written columns for years decrying the conditions that have come upon us. I'm in full agreement with what your are saying. Maybe the question in the title implied more than I intended. And, I have known what was happening for years. Thanks for your comment and for reading my articles. I'll try to do better next time.
